While granite is a strong and durable material, it is not meant for such hot temperatures such as holding a pot that was previously on a stove or a pan that was cooking in the oven. Placing such high heat on your granite countertop for only a few seconds will not cause significant damage, but if it continues to be a habit or the item is left on the countertop for a longer period of time, the damage is likely to occur.
What happens if you put a hot pot or pan on a granite countertop?
If you put a hot pot or pan on a granite countertop there are a few things that could occur. The heat from the pan could cause a chemical reaction with the granite, thus causing discoloration of the countertop. High heat on granite also can cause the seal on the countertop to wear down and weaken, which makes the countertop more susceptible to absorbing spills and any residue left on the surface. If you need to place a hot pot or pan on your counter, we strongly advise you to use a hot pad or trivet instead of directly on the countertop.
